How to play

• One composer hides behind six fun-fact clues, cryptic first, obvious last.
• You have six tries: guess (a surname is enough) or ask for the next clue — either spends a try.
• By Ear gives you a real recording and its engraved score with the name inked out. A hint (year, era, genre) costs a try.
• Pick a level: Easy uses common-knowledge clues, Hard only the niche ones. Fewer tries scores more; Medium doubles, Hard triples.

Reporting a stage name

Stage names are chosen by players and appear publicly on the leaderboard. If one is offensive:

• On the web: hover the leaderboard row and press ⚑ to report it, or 🚫 to hide that player from your own board.
• In the iOS app: press and hold the name, then choose Report this name or Hide this player.

Reports are reviewed within 24 hours and objectionable names are withdrawn from every screen. Hiding a player is immediate and private to your device — undo it from the bottom of the leaderboard.

Deleting your data

On the web, use delete my data beside your stage name. In the app, Profile → Delete my data. This erases your name, scores, streak and history immediately and permanently. The privacy policy lists exactly what is stored.

Common questions

• I lost my scores. Progress is tied to the device it was made on — there are no accounts, so scores do not follow you between a browser and the app, or across devices.
• The audio will not play. Check the device is not on silent, then reload. Every clip is streamed, so it needs a connection.
• A clue or answer looks wrong. Write in — corrections are welcome and get fixed.
• Where do the recordings come from? All public-domain or Creative Commons, with each performer and licence named on the credits page.
